Comprehensive Diagnosis and Treatment for Urinary Tract and Men's Health Conditions

Urology is a medical and surgical specialty concerned with the diagnosis, treatment and follow-up of diseases affecting the urinary tract in both women and men, as well as conditions involving the male reproductive system. The field includes organs such as the kidneys, ureters, bladder and urethra, together with the prostate, testes and penis.

The kidneys filter waste products and excess fluid from the bloodstream to produce urine. Urine is transported through the ureters to the bladder, where it is stored before being expelled through the urethra. Disorders affecting this system may influence not only urinary function but also overall health and quality of life.

The LÖSANTE Urology Department provides comprehensive diagnostic and treatment services through evidence-based medical approaches, modern diagnostic technologies and patient-centred care. Our aim is to support patients in managing urological conditions while helping to maintain long-term health and quality of life.

What Does the Urology Department Treat?

Urology is a broad medical specialty that evaluates, diagnoses and manages a wide range of conditions affecting the urinary tract and male reproductive system.

Common areas of interest include:

Kidney and urinary tract stones
Urinary tract infections
Bladder disorders
Voiding dysfunction
Urinary incontinence
Prostate disorders
Male infertility
Erectile dysfunction
Urethral strictures
Urological cancers
Testicular disorders
Varicocele

Kidney and Urinary Tract Disorders

The kidneys and urinary tract play a vital role in maintaining fluid balance and removing waste products from the body. Conditions affecting this system may significantly impact daily life and overall wellbeing.

Common disorders include:

Kidney stone disease
Urinary tract infections
Bladder disorders
Voiding dysfunction
Urinary incontinence

If left untreated, some of these conditions may progress and lead to more complex health problems.

Kidney Stone Disease

Kidney stone disease is one of the most common conditions treated within urology. Stones form when minerals and crystals accumulate within the kidneys and may cause symptoms as they move through the urinary tract.

Common symptoms may include:

Severe flank pain
Blood in the urine
Nausea and vomiting
Pain during urination

Treatment depends on the size, location and characteristics of the stone, as well as the patient’s overall condition. Some stones pass naturally, while others may require stone fragmentation procedures or surgical treatment.

Prostate Disorders

The prostate gland is an important part of the male reproductive system and is located just below the bladder. Prostate-related conditions become increasingly common with age. Early evaluation and regular check-ups play an important role in the management of prostate disorders.

Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH)

Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) is a common condition characterised by enlargement of the prostate gland. As the prostate enlarges, it may place pressure on the urethra and affect normal urinary function.

Common symptoms may include:

Frequent urination
Night-time urination (nocturia)
Difficulty urinating
Weak urinary stream
A feeling of incomplete bladder emptying

Prostate Cancer

Prostate cancer is one of the most frequently diagnosed cancers in men. In its early stages, it may not cause noticeable symptoms. Regular urological assessments may therefore be recommended for certain age groups and individuals with risk factors.

Early diagnosis may expand available treatment options and contribute to more favourable outcomes.

Urinary Tract Infections

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are common conditions that occur when microorganisms enter and multiply within the urinary system. Although UTIs are more common in women, they can also affect men.

Possible symptoms include:

Burning sensation during urination
Frequent urination
Increased urgency to urinate
Lower abdominal discomfort
Cloudy or strong-smelling urine

With appropriate evaluation and treatment, most urinary tract infections can be effectively managed.

Bladder Disorders

The bladder is responsible for storing urine before it is eliminated from the body. Conditions affecting the bladder may interfere with urinary function and significantly impact quality of life.

Common bladder-related conditions include:

Bladder infections
Bladder stones
Bladder tumours
Bladder pain syndrome (interstitial cystitis)

Early assessment is particularly important in cases involving bladder tumours, as timely diagnosis may support appropriate treatment planning.

Urinary Incontinence

Urinary incontinence refers to the involuntary leakage of urine and may affect both women and men. If left untreated, it can have a considerable impact on daily activities, social interactions and overall wellbeing.

Common types of urinary incontinence include:

Stress Urinary Incontinence

This type may occur during activities that increase abdominal pressure, such as coughing, sneezing, laughing or lifting heavy objects.

Urge Urinary Incontinence

Urge incontinence is characterised by a sudden and difficult-to-control need to urinate. It may be accompanied by frequent urination and night-time awakening to urinate.

Mixed Urinary Incontinence

Mixed incontinence involves features of both stress and urge urinary incontinence.

Diagnostic evaluation may include:

Voiding diaries
Patient questionnaires
Urinalysis
Post-void residual (PVR) measurement
Urodynamic studies

Urethral Stricture

Urethral stricture is a narrowing of the urethra caused by scar tissue formation, which may restrict the normal flow of urine. The condition is more commonly diagnosed in men.

Possible symptoms include:

Weak urinary stream
A feeling of incomplete bladder emptying
Spraying or split urinary stream
Difficulty urinating
Recurrent urinary tract infections

Diagnostic evaluation may involve uroflowmetry, ultrasonography, cystoscopy, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and other imaging techniques when clinically appropriate.

Treatment options depend on the severity and extent of the narrowing. Endoscopic procedures or surgical approaches may be considered in suitable cases.

Men’s Health and Andrology

Andrology is an important subspecialty of urology focused on male reproductive health and sexual function. The evaluation, diagnosis and management of conditions affecting the male reproductive system form a significant part of urological care.

Common conditions evaluated within andrology include:

Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH)
Erectile dysfunction
Male infertility
Varicocele
Testicular disorders
Other conditions affecting male reproductive health

Varicocele

Varicocele is the enlargement of veins within the scrotum and is considered one of the common causes of male infertility. In some individuals, it may lead to discomfort, pain or changes in sperm quality.

Male Infertility

Male infertility is a significant health concern that may affect a couple’s ability to achieve pregnancy. Comprehensive urological evaluation plays an important role in identifying potential contributing factors.

Assessment may include:

Detailed medical history
Physical examination
Laboratory investigations
Imaging studies
Additional diagnostic assessments when required

Erectile Dysfunction

Erectile dysfunction refers to the inability to achieve or maintain an erection sufficient for satisfactory sexual activity. Vascular conditions, hormonal changes, neurological disorders and certain chronic diseases may contribute to its development.

Identifying underlying causes is an important step in determining the most appropriate management approach.

Testicular Disorders

Testicular conditions such as infections, masses, trauma and structural abnormalities may require urological assessment. Early evaluation and follow-up can help support appropriate management and reduce the risk of complications.

Urological Cancers

The field of urology is also involved in the diagnosis, treatment and follow-up of cancers affecting the urinary tract and male reproductive system. Early detection plays a key role in treatment planning and long-term management.

Common urological cancers include:

Prostate cancer
Kidney cancer
Bladder cancer
Testicular cancer
Penile cancer

Regular health assessments and evaluation of risk factors may contribute to the early detection of these conditions.

When Should You See a Urologist?

Many urological conditions may present with symptoms at an early stage. Seeking timely medical evaluation can help support diagnosis and treatment planning.

A urological assessment may be appropriate if you experience:

Frequent urination
Pain or burning during urination
Weak urinary stream
Interrupted urinary flow
Blood in the urine
Frequent night-time urination
Groin, flank or lower abdominal pain
Urinary incontinence
Recurrent urinary tract infections
Erectile difficulties
Concerns related to reproductive health

While these symptoms do not always indicate a serious condition, professional evaluation may help determine their underlying cause.

Diagnostic Methods

The evaluation of urological conditions typically begins with a detailed medical history and physical examination. Laboratory tests and imaging studies may be used to support the diagnostic process when clinically indicated.

Common diagnostic methods include:

Urinalysis
Blood tests
Ultrasonography
Computed Tomography (CT)
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
Cystoscopy
Urodynamic testing
Uroflowmetry and voiding studies
Post-void residual (PVR) measurement

These diagnostic tools help physicians evaluate the nature, extent and characteristics of a condition and support the development of an appropriate treatment plan.

Treatment Options

The treatment of urological conditions is tailored according to the type and stage of the disease, the patient's age, overall health status and individual needs.

Depending on the diagnosis and clinical evaluation, the following treatment approaches may be considered:

Medical Treatment

Many urological conditions can be managed with medication. Medical treatment may be used for urinary tract infections, prostate disorders, urinary symptoms and various functional conditions.

Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy (ESWL)

ESWL is a non-invasive treatment method that uses shock waves to break certain kidney and urinary tract stones into smaller fragments, allowing them to pass more easily through the urinary system.

Endoscopic Procedures

Many urological conditions can be treated using minimally invasive endoscopic techniques performed through the natural urinary tract without large surgical incisions.

Laser Treatments

Laser technologies may be used in selected urological conditions and can provide effective treatment options in appropriate cases.

Laparoscopic and Robotic Surgery

Minimally invasive surgical techniques, including laparoscopic and robotic-assisted procedures, may allow treatment through smaller incisions and support a faster recovery process in suitable patients.

Open Surgery

Open surgical procedures may still be recommended in selected cases when clinically appropriate.

Personalised Treatment and Follow-up

Urological conditions are often influenced by lifestyle factors, overall health status and accompanying medical conditions. For this reason, treatment and follow-up plans are developed individually for each patient.

Comprehensive patient evaluation
Individualised treatment planning
Lifestyle recommendations when appropriate
Regular follow-up programmes
Monitoring of treatment outcomes

form the basis of a personalised approach to care.

Privacy and Patient-Centred Care

Many urological conditions involve sensitive personal health matters. Respect for patient privacy and the establishment of a trusting clinical environment are therefore important components of the care process.

At LÖSANTE:

Patient confidentiality is respected
Assessments are conducted with attention to privacy
Patients are encouraged to discuss their concerns openly
Information regarding diagnostic and treatment processes is provided clearly

Importance of Early Diagnosis

Many urological conditions may present with symptoms in their early stages. However, delaying medical evaluation can postpone diagnosis and treatment.

Early diagnosis may help:

Support timely treatment planning
Reduce the risk of disease progression
Improve treatment outcomes
Preserve quality of life
Facilitate long-term follow-up and monitoring

Regular health assessments are particularly important for conditions such as prostate disorders, kidney stone disease and urological cancers.
